The Conjuring: Last Rites marks the culmination of the cinematic saga centered on paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Set to release on September 5, 2025, this installment will bring their on-screen journey to a powerful close—yet may open doors for future tales in the broader Conjuring Universe.

This final chapter tackles one of the Warrens’ most infamous real-life cases: the haunting of the Smurl family in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. The Smurls reported more than a year of terrifying paranormal disturbances—violent attacks, foul odors, disembodied voices, and a demonic presence. The Warrens’ investigation in 1986 concluded the presence of multiple spirits, including a destructive demon.
Directed once again by Michael Chaves, who also led The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II, Last Rites is written by David Leslie Johnson‑McGoldrick along with Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, based on a story co-developed with James Wan. Production took place in London between September and November 2024.

Beyond the horror elements, the narrative is said to focus deeply on themes of family, faith, legacy, and closure. The film introduces Judy Warren—now grown and played by Mia Tomlinson—who brings inherited clairvoyant sensitivity and new emotional depth to the proceedings. Her boyfriend Tony (played by Ben Hardy) also plays a significant role.
At approximately 135 minutes, this installment promises to be both a standout horror sequel and a heartfelt farewell to iconic characters who’ve anchored this universe since 2013. Following its theatrical run, the film is expected to stream on Max in late 2025 or early 2026.
While the Warrens’ journey may find closure, the Conjuring Universe continues to expand through spin-offs and new chapters—this film closing out its “Phase One”
